At our practice for oral surgery and implantology at Rosenthaler Platz in Berlin-Mitte, it was a special pleasure to welcome colleagues to a continuing education evening. We invited oral surgeons, dentists and referring practices from the implantology field – for an evening of professional exchange, hands-on insights, and good conversation.
The focus was on two topics that are closely interconnected in modern implantology: digital implant prosthetics and the consultation of patients. Both help decide whether a dental implant ultimately becomes a fixed, durable and aesthetic restoration.
Why digital implant prosthetics?
In recent years, implantology has evolved from analog impressions and plaster models to a fully digital workflow. Instead of impression trays and impression material, the intraoral scanner is used today; the bone situation is assessed via 3D imaging (CBCT/DVT), the implant position is planned on the computer, and the restoration is fabricated using the CAD/CAM process.
The benefit is tangible for clinicians and patients alike: more precise planning, fewer sessions, a more comfortable impression without a gag reflex, and a predictable, aesthetic result.

„Digital instead of analog: new approaches in implant prosthetics“
Priv.-Doz. Dr. Pieralli of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin gave an impressive demonstration of how digital workflows make implant prosthetics more precise, more predictable, and more comfortable – from intraoral scanning through computer-assisted implant planning and guided implant surgery to the CAD/CAM fabrication of crowns, bridges and bars.
A particular focus was on backward planning: here the desired prosthetic result is defined first, and the implant position is then derived backwards from it. So the starting point is not the implant but the future tooth – the prerequisite for fixed restorations that both function and look natural.
From scan to crown: the digital workflow
The path of a restoration was traced step by step:
- 3D diagnostics (CBCT/DVT): millimetre-accurate assessment of available bone and important structures such as the nerve and sinus.
- Digital impression: the intraoral scanner captures the situation quickly and with little contact, without classic impression material.
- Virtual planning: implant position, axis and depth are defined on the computer – aligned with the prosthetic goal.
- Guided implantation: a surgical guide transfers the plan precisely into the mouth – gently and predictably.
- CAD/CAM fabrication: crown, bridge or bar are digitally designed and precisely fitted.
Where the starting situation allows, steps can be combined – all the way to immediate restoration, in which patients receive their fixed teeth promptly.

„Implant consultations that make the difference – a systematic path to success“
Stephanie Gruß of the Coaching-Atelier turned the focus to the implant consultation: How do you conduct a structured, respectful consultation that builds trust and confidently guides patients to the right decision? Because even the best surgical and prosthetic planning only unfolds its value once people understand and trust it.
Topics included clear information about treatment alternatives, handling costs and questions, as well as the empathetic support of anxious patients – a concern that is especially close to our hearts at the practice.
What this means for our patients
For you as a patient, these developments pay off directly: we plan a dental implant in Berlin precisely on 3D imaging, place it – where possible – guided and gently, and restore it with a precisely fitted, fixed prosthesis. Fewer sessions, more predictability and a result to be proud of – from a single gap to an edentulous jaw.
