Instructions Before Surgery

Good preparation is half the operation.

Good preparation is half the operation. With the right guidance on diet, medication, sedation and accompaniment, you help ensure that your procedure goes safely and that healing gets off to an optimal start – the complete instructions are also available to you as a PDF.

Our tips before a surgical procedure (local anaesthesia)

  • It is advisable, though not strictly necessary, to bring an accompanying person.
  • Prepare a cold pack at home.
  • If you take a painkiller, avoid aspirin (active ingredient acetylsalicylic acid / ASA) for the 7 days before the procedure, unless otherwise agreed with us and your family doctor.
  • With local anaesthesia, you may eat and drink as usual before the appointment (this does not apply to operations under sedation or general anaesthesia!).
  • Relax: try to get enough sleep on the day of the procedure. Stress can impair the healing process and make the procedure more difficult.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is not too tight. Avoid jewellery, in particular piercings in the mouth area.
  • Take one Ibuprofen 400 mg tablet (available over the counter) 30 to 60 minutes before the procedure.
  • Brush your teeth before the appointment.

Preparation for procedures under twilight sedation

For procedures under twilight sedation, medication is administered to you intravenously. Please note the following:

  • Fasting: you must not consume any food or fluids for at least 3 hours before the procedure.
  • Accompanying person: it is mandatory that you be accompanied by a person who remains present throughout the entire treatment. Without an accompanying person, the operation cannot take place.
  • After the procedure: it usually takes 1 to 2 hours for the medication to be fully broken down by the body. During this time, our rest rooms with comfortable couches are available to you before you can set off home.
  • Fitness to drive: sedation can impair your fitness to drive. We therefore recommend that you do not drive a car or ride a bicycle for 24 hours after sedation.
